Hanwell Preserves

Hanwell Preserves are a collection of jam and chutneys made by our young entrepreneurs, ingredients that have gone into the preservatives have been grown either in pots or on the allotment.  Young people have learnt how to grow and harvest fruit and veg and herbs, then turn them into preservative.

​

Looking after the environment by recycling is an important part of the programme, all off cuts are used to make our compost.  we also have a jam jar recycling process where by customers get money off their next purchase by returning their used jars.

​

Our horticultural programme runs various times through out the week between 10:00am and 3:00pm in term times. This programme is open to young people not in education, employment or training.

Oregano​:

Oregano is an important culinary and medicinal herb that as been used in medicine and cooking for thousands of years- with a number of potential health benefits.

​​

Rosemary:

The narrow leaves are used as culinary herb, in perfumery, and as an emblem of remembrance.

​​

Mint:

Mint is used for flavouring food such as ice creams, chocolate bars and others.

​​

Tarragon:

In France, tarragon is best recommended to use it on non-vegetarians dishes.

​​

Bay Leaves:

These herbs provide an aromatic smell to repel certain pests from eating up all the food such as insects, rodents and silverfishes.

​

Coriander:

Coriander herbs are used mainly edible and dried parts are used for standard cooking.

 

Chive:

Chives are found in shopping stores or grown in home gardens. They are used as ingredients for fish, potatoes, soups and more.

 

Basil:

The word basil is not to be confused with the character, Basil Brush. In India, basil is popular for cooking.

 

Garlic:

A garlic is a culinary spice that you see grown in gardens. They are used to provide a bit of flavour. In stories, garlic is one of Count Dracula’s weaknesses.

 

Thyme:

Thyme is used to make medicines like mouthwash.

 

Sage:

All types of herbs add flavours to food, and sage is no exception. Sage can improves memory, attention function, alertness and mood.

Parsley:

Parsley is used to add a good flavour to food such as soup,  it is used for producing medicines.

​
